Some unwelcome guests

bees

“Come up here and look at all these insects”, I shouted down the stairs to her. Looking up from my desk as I started to get down to work the air was full of black creatures.

“What do you think they are?” I continued when she had arrived as the realisation started to hit me and, opening the window to hear them buzzing “Damn! The dog!!”

In my imagination I saw the dog having found a bee’s nest somewhere in the garden and now under attack, but instead she was perched on the front porch, from where she can keep an eye on front gate in order to launch herself at high speed and voice her displeasure.

Leading her into safety I looked up at the apex of the roof, where a writhing mass of bees had decided to settle and the air was thick was the buzzing creatures.

Explaining the situation to my other half, she decided to wait an hour before getting on the phone to find someone to deal with them, hoping they would disperse. But after she went an inspected them she got straight on the phone, calling the council for advice on what to do.

Making a number of calls the advice was wait until the afternoon and see if they decide to nest where they are or settle. One man said he would come at 6 pm if they were still there, while another said he was so busy with bees at the moment he wasn’t sure when he could come.

In the end there was no need. A couple of hours later they had all gone, leaving no trace at all that they had ever arrived. While bees are completely necessary and declining in many areas, it is good that we have so many around us here. However, I’d really rather not have them nesting on my roof!
